Bird Bolivia — Birding tour from Santa Cruz to La Paz

Calling all Birdwatchers – this program is specifically designed for you! Join us on an incredible journey to some of the best birding sites in South America.

Bolivia supports over 1400 species of birds, an impressive number considering the entire country is only the size of France and Spain combined. This 18-day trip provides birding over a wide range of habitats including lowland rainforest around Santa Cruz, montane and cloud forests of Amboro and Carrasco National Parks as well as Yungas, interandean valleys around Cochabamba, with a couple of days around Lake Titicaca and in the Andes Mountain Range.

Numerous spectacular species are expected to be found in this birders' paradise. Observing over 400 bird species is not an unreasonable expectation for this trip, including 12 to 15 endemics.

Our journey ends in La Paz.

Bespoke extensions are also available such as Madidi National Park and Western Bolivian Boundaries, Trinidad and the Amazon River System including the Blue-Throated Macaw, Noel Kempff National Park, Southern Altiplano and three species of flamingos, and virtually any other place in Bolivia.

• Santa Cruz - Santa Cruz (437m/1,434ft) is the best place to start a birding trip to Bolivia because it lies in the eastern lowlands and allows a gradual acclimatization to increasingly high altitude while birding sites to the west en route to La Paz (over 3,000m/10,000ft) higher up.

• Southwest of Santa Cruz - The dry deciduous forest alongside the Andean foothills, about 120 km southwest of Santa Cruz, remains untouched due to the opening of a new road between Santa Cruz and Cochabamba to the north. A number of localized species hard to see elsewhere occur here, including Dull-colored Grassquit, Ochre-cheeked Spinetail, and Slaty Gnateater. Even the Andean Condor can be seen here.

• Northwest of Santa Cruz - There are a number of excellent birding sites along the Santa Cruz – Cochabamba road too. Dark-throated Seedeater, Greater Rhea, Tawny-bellied Seedeater and White-bellied Nothura occur en route from Santa Cruz.

• Villa Tunari and El Puente Jungle Lodge - We eventually reach this small resort in the upper tropical zone half way between Santa Cruz and Cochabamba, on the edge of Carrasco National Park. This forest supports some good birds, most of which are widespread throughout South America. From our lodge we may spot Fiery-caped Manakin and Round-tailed Manakin, Paradise Tanager, White-winged Shrike Tanager, and White-throated Woodpecker. Oilbird occurs at nearby caves. Many other interesting birds are found in the area, including Buff-throated Woodcreeper, Cuvier’s Toucan, Fasciated Tiger-Heron, Little Tinamou, Speckled Chachalaca, Thick-billed Euphonia, White-necked Woodcreeper and many more.

• Cochabamba - The city of Cochabamba (2,570m/8,414ft) lies in a 10 km-wide natural arena of rolling hills below snow-capped Cerro Tunari (5,180m/16,995ft). The dry and sunny climate is very pleasant. The city is near some great birding sites, not least the road to Quillacollo.

• Towards the high Andes - The 254-km road west from Cochabamba ascends to the puna and the scruffy town of Oruro (3,700m/12,139ft), near lake Uru-Uru where you can expect great birding when the water levels are suitable.

• The high Andes - La Paz, the highest capital city in the world, lies at 3,636m (11,929ft) in a 5 km-wide canyon below the snow-capped Illimani (6,402m/21,004ft). White-tipped Plantcutter is fairly common in gardens in lower parts of the city. Streak-throated Canastero and Peruvian Sierra-Finch occur at the nearby Valley of the Moon.

• Yungas Rainforests - This is one of South America’s most spectacular roads, descending 4,300m (14,108ft) in just 80 km. The road’s steepness is the main reason why so much superb forest remains. The area is good for birds such as the endemic Black-hooded Sunbeam, Scaled Metaltail, Stripe-headed Antpitta, White-browed Conebill, White-eared Solitaire, and Short-tailed Finch. Our journey ends in La Paz.
