Bird Bolivia — Birding from Santa Cruz to La Paz

Santa Cruz (437m/1,434ft) is the best place to start a birding trip to Bolivia because it lies in the eastern lowlands and allows a gradual acclimatisation to increasingly high altitude while birding sites to the west en route to La Paz (over 3,000m/10,000ft) higher up.

We eventually reach the yungas rainforest in the upper tropical zone half way between Santa Cruz and Cochabamba, on the edge of Carrasco National Park. This forest supports some good birds, most of which are widespread throughout South America. From our lodge we may spot Fiery-caped Manakin and Round-tailed Manakin, Paradise Tanager, White-winged Shrike Tanager, and White-throated Woodpecker. Oilbird occurs at nearby caves. Many other interesting birds are found in the area, including Buff-throated Woodcreeper, Cuvier's Toucan, Fasciated Tiger-Heron, Little Tinamou, Speckled Chachalaca, Thick-billed Euphonia, White-necked Woodcreeper and many more.

There are a number of excellent birding sites northwest of Santa Cruz too. Dark-throated Seedeater, Greater Rhea, Tawny-bellied Seedeater and White-bellied Nothura occur en route from Santa Cruz to Cochabamba.

The city of Cochabamba (2,570m/8,414ft) lies in a 10 km-wide natural arena of rolling hills below snow-capped Cerro Tunari (5,180m/16,995ft). The dry and sunny climate is very pleasant. The city is near some great birding sites, not least the Quillacollo road.

The 254-km road southwest from Cochabamba to Oruro ascends to puna and the scruffy town of Oruro (3,700m/12,139ft), near lake Uru-Uru where several species of flamingos (Andean, Chilean, James) can be seen when the water levels are suitable.

La Paz, the highest capital city in the world, lies at 3,636m (11,929ft) in a 5 km-wide canyon below the snow-capped Illimani (6,402m/21,004ft). White-tipped Plantcutter is fairly common in gardens in lower parts of the city. Streak-throated Canastero and Peruvian Sierra-Finch occur at the nearby Valley of the Moon.

Our journey ends in La Paz. We will transfer to the airport for your flight back home. A number of extensions are available. Do not hesitate to contact us.

Adapt or extend your stay: Towards Uyuni, the area claims for nature adventure over the Altiplano and in the mountains of southern Bolivia and the Eduardo Avaroa National Reserve, at an average of 3,600 meters above sea level. This is a region of singular interest, for its scenery and terrain as well as its ecology, for those explorers who wish to experience some very peculiar aspects of nature, some of which exist solely in this region of the world.
