Bird Bolivia — Birding in Santa Cruz area

Santa Cruz (437m/1,434ft) is the best place to start a birding trip to Bolivia - it lies in the eastern lowlands and allows a gradual acclimatisation to increasingly high altitude while birding sites to the west en route to La Paz (over 3,000m/10,000ft) higher up.

Bolivia’s fastest growing city is surrounded by cerrado, chaco-like thorn scrub, gallery woodlands and wetlands. Hence the city environs are worth a look before heading west towards Cochabamba and much more exciting birding. Migratory birds here include a number of tyrants such as the rare Hudson’s Black-Tyrant, which has been recorded during the austral winter (April to September).

Specialties include Ashy-tailed Swift, Black-capped Warbling-Finch, Blue-crowned Parakeet, Golden-collared Macaw, Grey-and-chestnut Seedeater, Hudson’s Black-Tyrant, Ringed Teal, White eared Puffbird, White-banded Mockingbird, White-rumped Monjita, Yellow-billed Cardinal.

The dry deciduous forest alongside the Andean foothills, about 120 km southwest of Santa Cruz, remains untouched due to the opening of a new road between Santa Cruz and Cochabamba to the north. A number of localized species hard to see elsewhere occur here, including Dull-colored Grassquit, Ochre-cheeked Spinetail, and Slaty Gnateater. Even the Andean Condor can be seen here.

There are a number of excellent birding sites northwest of Santa Cruz too. Dark-throated Seedeater, Greater Rhea, Tawny-bellied Seedeater and White-bellied Nothura occur en route from Santa Cruz to Cochabamba.

A number of localized species hard to see elsewhere occur here, including Dull-colored Grassquit, Ochre-cheeked Spinetail, and Slaty Gnateater. Even the Andean Condor can be seen here.

• Northwest of Santa Cruz - There are a number of excellent birding sites along the Santa Cruz - Cochabamba road too. Dark-throated Seedeater, Greater Rhea, Tawny-bellied Seedeater and White-bellied Nothura occur en route from Santa Cruz.
