PROJECT SUMMARY

The vast diversity of Bolivian birdlife attracts increasing numbers of birdwatchers each year.

This unique and indispensable guide covers in detail the identification, voice, breeding, status, habitat and distribution of all the species and distinctive subspecies of the country.

All proceeds from the book sales will go directly toward bird conservation, ecotourism capacity building and raising environmental awareness in Bolivia through Asociación Armonía, the leading bird conservation organization in Bolivia committed to protecting the country’s most endangered species.

Sales of the books will fund:

• The production of a companion volume in English and Spanish, a handbook with detailed species accounts for all of Bolivia’s birds.

• Capacity building workshops that will train and educate naturalists and guides in rural areas that have ecotourism ventures, with emphasis on community-based projects.

• Production of regional and local field guides in Spanish to raise environmental awareness nationally and enhance local and regional knowledge.

How sales of the field guide will help support poor communities within Bolivia:

Revenues from sales of the field guide will be managed by Asociación Armonía, a not-for-profit conservation organization, as a special separate fund. It will be invested into ecotourism capacity building (training of local naturalists and guides for national and foreign bird watchers) in rural areas with ecotourism ventures, as well as into the production of regional field guides in Spanish.

Similarly, revenues from sales of the regional guides will be invested into additional ecotourism capacity building and possibly a second, updated edition of the national field guide and handbook.

Thus, as a kind of revolving fund these resources will guarantee continued ecotourism capacity building activities for several years, as well as contributions to raising environmental awareness in the Bolivian population locally, regionally, and nationally.
