In-Depth Uyuni Salt Flats

+ Private Exploration of Salar de Uyuni
+ Return to Uyuni

Off the beaten track there's no track at all!

Our destination: a blinding white expanse of nothingness...

Come join us on an exploration of a lifetime in Uyuni.

It looks like a vast snow-covered lake, but the white surface stretching to the horizon in every direction is salt, not snow. These flats, covering about 4,000 square miles (nearly 11,000 km²), were once part of a massive prehistoric lake, but today make up the world’s largest salt lake in the world. When dry it’s a barren landscape; during the wet season it becomes a spectacular giant mirror.

Essential Uyuni will enable you to explore the great Salar de Uyuni or Uyuni Salt Flats — an area of breathtaking natural beauty in southwestern Bolivia. Depending on the option chosen you will spend up to three nights at local hotels on the shores of the Salt Flats. All our services feature privately guided tours.

Choose among a variety of options for this Uyuni trip: you may want to concentrate on Uyuni Salt Flats (trip option detailed here), or explore the Salar & Lagoons of Sud Lípez including Laguna Colorada & Laguna Verde on a 3-day tour or a 4-day tour.

Customize any of these options to create your own and unique Uyuni travel experience.

All options are based on private/exclusive tour services and support a number of sustainable projects in Uyuni. Our lodgings are the best available in the area — i.e. simple but comfortable rooms with heating and ensuite bathroom with hot shower.

• UYUNI SALT FLATS or Salar de Uyuni - A succession of stunning landscapes and unusual shapes that captivate the visitor at first sight. Covering nearly 11,000 square kilometers, it is the largest salt plain in the world, formed by the disappearance of an inland sea that covered most of the Altiplano about 13,000 years ago. Here the horizon seems to blend in with the sky and you can hardly tell where the salt lake actually ends.

Stretched between distant Andean peaks like a shimmering white carpet, the Salar de Uyuni is home to pink flamingos, 1,000-year-old cacti, rare hummingbirds and hotels built entirely from blocks of salt. Photographers flock here to capture the unique landscape. With the mountains and the sky as its only frontiers, it allows us to observe mirages and optical illusions due to solar radiation and the crystallized ground. In its interior, virgin, uninhabited islands are home to immense cacti, unusual flowers and strange fauna.

The Salar de Uyuni has impressive views. Admire the flat whiteness, fringed by the peaks of mountains on the horizon beneath a bright blue sky. Besides, the silence that you can experience in this region is captivating. Calm and tranquility, not easily found anywhere, characterizes this landscape. As many other parts of South America, this developing area has very little to offer in terms of commodity. However, if you have an adventurous spirit you will be overwhelmed by its natural beauty.

Salar de Uyuni is one of the highlights of your trip to Bolivia and shouldn't be missed as it is a unique place in the world.

• Outstanding places for photographers at any time of year.

In-Depth Uyuni Salt Flats

+ Private Exploration of Salar de Uyuni
+ Return to Uyuni

Depart from Uyuni and head out across the blinding white expanse of Salar de Uyuni. You will spend four days and three nights exploring the Salt Flats and their surroundings.

All meals are provided during the 4WD expedition and nights are spent at local Andean lodges around the Salt Flats: typically on the northern shore (2 nights) and southern shore (1 night) of the Salar. Accommodations are simple but comfortable and we always use the best properties available in the area such as Hotel de Sal (i.e. Salt Hotel, premium) and Tayka Lodges.

Greet every morning with a new surprise as you view the sun rise over Salar de Uyuni. Then choose among a variety of activities for the day:

See giant cacti and unusual fauna as you explore Cactus Island. Also learn about the myths and legends associated with the Salar at Thunupa volcano (5,432m / 17,821ft), and walk to a pukara viewpoint for outstanding views over the Salar at dusk. Visit villages and look for pre-Columbian ruins bordering the salt flats. Walk up Thunupa Volcano for more stunning 360° panoramas. Cross the salt plains and 4WD along the southern shores looking for bizarre geological formations and ancient remains. Meet with llama herders, quinoa growers, salt gatherers. Llama trekking, Volcano trekking. Watch the sunset from Caltama or Thunupa viewpoint... And many other options to be discussed with our staff at the time of reservation.

Our last day (day 4) will take us across the salt pans for a last excursion around the Salar. Ask your English-speaking guide for a visit to Ojos del Salar and the old train graveyard on your way back to Uyuni.
